Mission Valley Revitalization

Westfield submitted an application to the City of San Diego on August 5, 2008 to begin the process of revitalizing Westfield Mission Valley. The submittal marks the beginning of an extensive, community-driven process and we look forward to working together.

What is Westfield submitting?

Westfield submitted an application to initiate an amendment to the Mission Valley Community Plan, which if approved, would allow new uses for the site. Today, the Mission Valley site is purely a retail destination, but we propose additional opportunities such as housing and office uses.

What is Westfield’s proposal?

The Mission Valley revitalization is a smart-growth proposal incorporating retail, office or hotel, and residential uses in a centralized location with convenient access to the surrounding freeways and Trolley.

The proposal calls for an additional 500,000 square feet of retail, 450,000 square feet of office space or a hotel, and 250 residential units, all within the existing “footprint” of Westfield Mission Valley.  The site currently accommodates more than 1.3 million square feet of retail space, covering  approximately 60 acres, with three department stores, nearly 100 specialty shops, an AMC-20 Multiplex Theater and a newly refurbished food court.

What happens next?

On September 3, 2008, the Mission Valley Unified Planning Group voted 18-2-1 requesting that the Planning Commission initiate the Community Plan Amendment process.  The Planning Commission is expected to vote on the initiation later this year.  If the request is approved by the Planning Commission, the environmental review would begin and Westfield will begin actively engaging the community in the planning process.
